What ways have you used your smartphone since you woke up this morning?
Before even getting out of bed, you’ve likely checked Twitter or Facebook Messenger, and will probably do so throughout the day. Without realizing it, you’ve been using over-the-top (OTT) communication apps. Many people use OTTs as their primary day-to-day communication tool and forgo the traditional phone call in favor of a faster, more modern way of having a conversation. And the emojis – don’t forget the emojis.
But what happens when an emergency strikes? All kids are taught to call 9-1-1 (or 112 if you’re in Europe) for help, but today’s generation is being raised in an age where phone calls can also be made through apps. This may make an OTT app someone’s go-to method for calling emergency services if they need help. That’s why regulators have begun to call for OTT communications providers to add emergency service functionality to their service, so users can reach help via their first port of call for sharing information.
